Housing

The Thief River area is home to approximately 6,200 households.  A large majority of residents are home owners, but there are many other housing options available, including a variety of townhome and apartment options.

A Great Place to Call “Home”

Thief River is a small town with a big heart. While relatively small in population, we are large enough to offer the  amenities and recreational options you crave, along with a multitude of housing options!

Rental Housing

The area has a wide variety of rental housing options available including both market rate housing and income restricted. Market rate housing is any housing that has no rent restrictions and which is not restricted by affordable housing laws. Income restricted properties must follow prescribed rates and tenants must meet income eligibility requirements. In addition, if you fall within certain income guidelines, you may be eligible for rental assistance or a housing voucher. If you have questions about income restricted housing, Section 8 housing, or subsidized apartments, call the Northwest Minnesota Multi-County Housing and Redevelopment Authority at 218-637-2431.

There are several market-rate properties in the area.

Rental Assistance

The Section 8 Rental Assistance Program can help you pay your rent if you are income eligible. Eligible families and individuals select their own rental units, and pay 30% to 40% of their adjusted gross income towards rent and utilities. Northwest Minnesota Multi-County HRA pays the balance of the rent. Check out their FAQs, fill out an application or contact the HRA for more information about Rent Assistance by calling 218-637-2431.
