Resilience, Determination, and Rebuilding
Entrepreneurship is often portrayed as a story of opportunity, growth, and success. During this month’s TREK program, local entrepreneur Cole Dazell reminded attendees that entrepreneurship can also be a story of resilience, determination, and rebuilding after life takes an unexpected turn.
Cole, a Thief River Falls native and founder of Neon Forge, joined TREK to share both his personal journey and his expertise in digital marketing, web design, and branding. His presentation offered practical insight for business owners while also serving as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished through perseverance and creativity.
Life Changes
In 2024, Cole experienced a life-changing spinal injury that left him with a disability requiring the use of a walker. At the time, he was living in Minneapolis and was suddenly unable to continue working in his previous role. The loss of income created significant financial hardship, ultimately leading him to lose his home.
Faced with difficult circumstances, Cole made an unconventional decision. He traded his vehicle for a 1981 RV and spent much of the following year living in the camper. While it would have been easy to focus on the challenges in front of him, Cole instead began looking for a way to create a new future.
Launch of Neon Forge
With support from family members and access to satellite internet, he launched Neon Forge from the camper that had become his home.
What started as a determination to rebuild quickly grew into a successful business. Within a matter of months, Cole had generated enough work to move into an apartment and establish a growing client base. Today, Neon Forge serves businesses looking to strengthen their online presence through strategic web design, branding, and digital marketing services.
During his presentation, Cole emphasized that effective digital marketing is about much more than simply having a website or social media account. Instead, he encourages businesses to think intentionally about who they are trying to reach and how customers actually interact with their brand online.
Questions such as whether a website is accessible to people with disabilities, whether it functions effectively on mobile devices, and whether it is designed around the needs of its intended audience are often overlooked by business owners. Yet these factors can have a significant impact on customer engagement and business success.
The Future of Business is Already Here
Cole also shared observations from working with businesses across the region. He noted that many businesses struggle not because they lack quality products, services, or dedication, but because they have not fully adapted to the realities of today’s digital marketplace. In many cases, businesses rely on outdated websites, limited digital advertising, or online strategies that fail to connect with modern consumers.
His message was clear: the future of business is already here.
Businesses that embrace digital tools, invest in their online presence, and focus on delivering a strong customer experience are better positioned to compete, grow, and remain relevant in an increasingly digital economy.
For TREK attendees, Cole’s presentation offered more than marketing advice. It demonstrated the power of adaptability, innovation, and perseverance. His story showed that even in the face of significant personal and professional setbacks, it is possible to create new opportunities and build something meaningful.
Advance Thief River extends its appreciation to Cole for sharing both his expertise and his inspiring journey with the TREK audience. His presentation was a reminder that some of the most impactful entrepreneurial stories are not simply about business success—they are about overcoming adversity, embracing change, and finding new ways to move forward.
