Finding Connection, Community, and Opportunity in His New Hometown
In this heartfelt short film, Luis Rico, owner of The Line on 59 in Thief River Falls, MN, shares his inspiring experience as a business owner and immigrant who has found connection, community, and opportunity in his new hometown. Originally from another country, Luis opens up about the challenges he’s faced—particularly the language barrier—and how the patience, kindness, and support of the Thief River Falls community helped him overcome them. Luis also has many friends in the community from places like Colombia, Nicaragua, and Honduras, and he highlights how newcomers like him feel happy and safe thanks to the town’s welcoming spirit. Luis also talks about embracing local traditions and events, from the County Fair and River Fest to car shows and holiday celebrations. Each event brings people together and brings people into town, creating opportunities for connection and growth. He shares his excitement about the positive changes happening in Thief River Falls—particularly how local businesses are collaborating and lifting one another up. With a unique menu and strong word-of-mouth, The Line on 59 is thriving as part of a network of local support. “Shopping local makes a difference,” Luis says. “We support each other.”
This film was created by Thief River Falls Public Schools and debuted at The Longest Table on May 6, 2025—a community celebration of stories that build bridges and foster belonging.
