Scott Ingram, The “Candyman” of Thief River Falls

For Scott Ingram, owner of Ingram’s Candy Store, running a business in Thief River Falls is about more than selling sweets—it’s about creating an unforgettable experience and building a sense of community. Ingram’s journey to becoming the town’s beloved “Candyman” is a story of passion, perseverance, and finding joy in connection.

A Passion for Retail

Scott moved to Thief River Falls in 2011, bringing with him a wealth of retail experience and a deep passion for the industry. Initially working for the store’s previous owner, Scott seized the opportunity to purchase the shop when it was offered to him. He saw the potential to grow the business and transform it into a hub of joy and nostalgia.

“I knew that with my background, I could take it to another level,” Scott shared. “It was scary at first, but I took the leap. The first couple of years were tough, but challenges come with opportunities if you’re willing to find them.”

Rebuilding and Reimagining

When COVID-19 forced Ingram’s Candy Store to temporarily close, Scott saw it as an opportunity to reinvent the space. Alongside his son, he revamped the store’s interior, installing new fixtures and creating an inviting, colorful atmosphere. He worked tirelessly to restock the shelves, ensuring the shop felt fresh and vibrant when it reopened.

“My goal was for anyone walking into the store to think, ‘Wow, this place is different!’ I wanted to make an impact,” Scott explained.

More Than Candy

For Scott, the store isn’t just about the products on the shelves. It’s about the memories and connections he creates with customers. From regular patrons to travelers from Canada, Scott makes it a point to engage personally with everyone who walks through the door.

“I don’t just sell candy; I sell an experience,” he said. “People come in, and I take the time to talk to them, learn their stories, and make them feel welcome. It’s about building relationships.”

A Commitment to Community

Beyond the walls of his store, Scott is deeply invested in the Thief River Falls community. Whether volunteering for local events like Christmas Kickoff in the Park or brainstorming ways to support other businesses, Scott sees community involvement as essential to his role as a business owner.

“This community has supported me so well, and I want to give back,” he said. “If you’re thinking about starting a business, get involved in the community. It’s rewarding in ways you can’t imagine.”

Lessons Learned and Shared

Reflecting on his journey, Scott emphasizes the importance of resilience and adaptability. He’s quick to point out that not every promotion or idea will succeed, but persistence is key.

“Some things work, and some don’t. But you keep trying, tweaking, and improving. The most important thing is to get people in the door. Once they’re here, the store sells itself,” Scott explained.

The Future of Ingram’s Candy Store

Scott envisions his candy store as a place where memories are made and smiles are shared. Whether it’s children proudly redeeming gift certificates or travelers discovering the shop for the first time, Scott’s dedication to his craft and his community shines through.

As Scott puts it, “I feel like I’m supposed to be here, doing this. It’s a blessing, and I’m just trying to do the best I can—for my business, my customers, and this amazing community.”

Ingram’s Candy Store continues to be a sweet staple in Thief River Falls, not just for its confections but for the joy and warmth Scott Ingram brings to every interaction.
